We have two main fuel sources:

  1. carbohydrate (glycogen)

  2. and fat

Carbohydrates are the preferred source the faster we go, and we want to finish races as fast as we can!

Unfortunately, carbohydrate storage and intake is limited in our bodies!

Understanding how much of each fuel source you are using at different intensities (pace, power, heart rate) is key in determining the how fast you can go in an endurance race. This knowledge can also help shape our training to become more efficient at burning fat and protecting those internal glycogen stores.
