What is lactate (aka lactic acid)?
Lactate is a byproduct of the glycolitic (carbohydrate) energy system. Higher intensities require more energy, and thus we have to tap into our internal stores of carbohydrate. The price we pay for that is an increased amount of lactate in our blood stream.
Lactate in and of itself can actually be reused as a fuel source by the aerobic energy system! Unfortunately, lactate is accompanied by a hydrogen ion, and the buildup of hydrogen ions in our blood stream is what causes that heavy feeling of fatigue in our legs and arms at faster paces. Anyone who has run a 400m all out knows exactly what this feels like!
As mentioned, the aerobic system can reuse lactate and slow the build up, but only if it is robust and well trained. The longer the race, the more important this becomes!
